community training at this gym
Community Training has three session times to choose from. You pick the time, so fitting training into your life makes sense and works.
We train at 3:00, 4:30, or 6:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
All sessions are 60 minutes and include 20 minutes of “flex time” both before and after (this means you can train for a full 100 minutes, if you like!).
“Flex time” is an opportunity to get in an early warm up, take time to cool down after your session, ask questions and practice your form, or take some extra time to finish up your sets needed.
Training is a process of continual refinement and learning, so rushing is counter-effective to getting the most from your sessions. At This Gym, you get to focus on doing your best, resting efficiently, and you’ll still have plenty of time for attention and help from me.
Price and Scheduling
After you complete Start Here, the six week beginner training program, you’ll pay a monthly flat rate of $318 (includes 6% KY sales tax).
This is an automatic payment that occurs at either the beginning or mid-point of each month — you decide which billing date works best for you. (There is also an option to split your bill: pay $159 at the beginning of the month, and $159 at the mid-point of the month.)
The flat monthly rate includes a minimum of 46 weeks of training (with two sessions per week) every year. If there is a minor holiday during the week (example: Thanksgiving), training days will be adjusted so that two sessions are still provided.
You’ll have access to our online scheduler to sign up for your sessions individually, and you can do so as far in advance as you would like.
Session Size, Pacing, and Style
Sessions are currently capped at 6 athletes max; you’ll be working with other folks who have similar goals to you, who have experience working in this environment, and who are excited to welcome you!
Each athlete has their own individual program and works at their own pace. This is not a group workout or a fitness class. The programs are personal, but the energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement are shared!
It’s not competition, it’s community.
Training Expectations and Requirements
All athletes are expected to train twice per week (baring illness, travel, etc) and to make a personal commitment to begin with a minimum of six months of training.
This ensures that sufficient time is spent in training so your body and mind can adapt and get stronger; this understanding comes from my 15 years of experience.
Additionally, almost every person I meet with says that accountability is one of their needs and I know that making this commitment is a good first step to building the skills of accountability: consistency, discipline, and self-motivation.
All athletes are required to follow The Etiquette in This Gym:
No outside shoes inside the gym: Wear dedicated training shoes that you carry in (not walk into the gym in); or go barefoot / wear socks. Use the provided shoe storage and never worry about leaving your training shoes at home again!
Be mindful of where you park: Do not block driveways. Do not park in front of the school. Or ride your bike here and lock up at the community rack!
Respect the space, respect the tools: Return all equipment to its dedicated spot. If you sweat on something, wipe it down.
Respect other athletes: No unsolicited comments about others' bodies. No unsolicited advice. Watch yourself around others when they are lifting, watch your lifts when others are around.
Respect yourself: You are in charge of how hard you work and when you rest; attend to your physical needs. Wear clothes you can move in, bring your shoes, water bottle, and a towel!
Training Philosophy and Practice
This Gym was built because I recognize that anyone can learn the skills needed to become stronger if they are given simple tools and a supportive environment in which to practice.
My philosophy is simple: Strength is the foundational virtue upon which all other virtues stand because strength is the physical manifestation of presence.
What are these other virtues? Compassion, Patience, Perseverance, Courage, Determination, Flexibility, Willingness, Forgiveness, Wholeheartedness.
Without presence, none of these are possible. Strength is the physical manifestation of presence.
Strength is a skill that can be understood and learned through practice. You do not have to be exceptional, you only have to show up and practice in order to learn a skill.
For our practice to be effective, we need simple tools and a supportive environment.
And so I built This Gym. I built This Gym for me and for you.
The goal of this practice is equally simple and straightforward: Use strength training to improve how well we move and increase our capacity so that we are able to do more of what we love, for longer.
At This Gym we accomplish this in three ways:
Introduce a simple and gentle way to prepare the mind and body for movement that doubles as a home practice. Frequent movement is an effective way to deepen our relationship with our own bodies, develop self-accountability and independence, and elevate our quality of life.
Gradually improve mobility using full-range strength movements that can prevent injury, promote sustainability of training, and reduce common aches and pains. If we want to keep moving, we must improve how we move as we increase our capacity to move.
Leverage strength to increase our capacity for all aspects of life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. We are complex beings and our training must embrace this fact.
More Offerings
Community Training is one aspect of a wider system.
If you train twice a week, you will get stronger, move better, and feel better. If you want more of that, I offer Add-On Training.
Add-On Training is targeted to your goals and needs, and can be done independently at home, using minimal equipment, or at a membership gym. It includes personalized workout programming, highly detailed demo videos and instructions, and unlimited access to me, via text, for questions or help as needed.
Add-On Training is available after your first six months of training at This Gym for $106/month (includes 6% KY sales tax and contains a special $50 discount for This Gym athletes only).
Private One-on-One Training is also available to Community Training clients as a one-off session or as a limited series of sessions designed to work on a specific skill or technique. One-on-One Training in series format comes with additional programming at no charge.
